The engine itself is surprisingly normal looking. But there are some very interesting details showing in the video. Before I saw this video I though that the crankshaft main caps were strengthened by some kind of girdle contraption to withstand such power. But there is none. The caps themselves have only two bolts (some high quality bolts though) and the caps seem to be regular M10 cast iron pieces. So I guess the stock M10 block is truly strong.

Some guy has used several hours to polish every surface inside the block. Wise idea to remove any possible places for cracks to start/hide. The cylinder bores are also interesting. I have never seen so smooth bores. I can’t see any honing marks. Maybe some trick to minimize the friction while disregarding the oil consumption.

The piston pins seem to be held in place with very weird looking locking mechanism. The outer diameter of the hole seems very large compered to the pin hole. So the piston might be hiding needle bearings. The piston itself looks fairly heavy but the color is a bit weird for a regular forged aluminum piston. The color of the unmachined surface is nearly identical to the connecting rod (which should be titanium) so maybe its using some trick alloy or just some coating.

Rumour has it that they even used blocks from roadcars that had over 100k km on them. Something about heat cycles on the iron strengthening the block.

Id say that with 4+ bar boost, the piston materials are very much a different kind of aluminum. Plus i doubt its built for any durability. 1 per race.

Some former engineer told after his BMW career that it was a myth. Probably a single sentence from a marketing dude just snowballed and the race team just didn’t want to deny this. The blocks were likely artificially aged.

According to some source the piston and the pin were the weak links of the engine. With the qualifying boost the engine lasted only couple of fast laps but the milder race boost got them to last for couple of hours. Unless something failed prematurely of course. Quite often something did.
